Lesson (10): Performing Advanced Keyword Analysis

After the preliminary research, set up the list of keyword suggestions for every page of your site; 5 to 20 suggestions for each page should be enough.

The best optimization technique is to get every one of your pages optimized for one or two (maximum three) excellently matching keywords. Thus, the aim of the advanced keyword research is to pick out the best 1-2 keywords for every page of your site from the list of 5-20 suggestions obtained at the end of the preliminary research.

In the course of this advanced research, we actually determine the real competition for each keyword suggestion, as well as analyzing several additional parameters.

The real competition for a keyword is the number of sites which are optimized for this keyword; intentionally or not. For instance, a website might have the keyword included in its title; however its author did it without any knowledge of optimization. Nevertheless, it helped this site get the high rankings.

To estimate how strong our competition will be when we optimize for a particular key phrase, perform the following tasks:

* Query a selected search engine for the key phrase which is under analysis;
* See how many pages on the Web contain this key phrase in their titles;
* See how many pages on the Web currently contain this key phrase in their bodies;
* Fetch the first ten URLs from the result list;
* Get the number of links to each of the top-10 pages;
* Get the Alexa Traffic Rank for each of the top-10 pages (this index shows how popular this site is according to Alexa statistics, www.alexa.com);
* Get the Google Traffic Estimator clicks per day, cost per day, average CPC price you’ll have to pay if you advertise with AdWords for this phrase;
* Get the Google PageRank for each of the top-10 pages (we will get to PageRank explanation later in this course).

Let’s go through these parameters and see how you should interpret them after the data is obtained.

Titles with keywords

The lower this index, the more productive the key phrase can be for you because this indicates that fewer pages on the Web have optimized titles, therefore you have less “title” competition.

The same is true for “Pages with keywords”; this indicates how many pages contain the key phrase in their bodies. The lower this number, the better for you.

The number of links to top-10 pages

Since link popularity plays an important role for many search engines, including Google, it will be harder for your site to outplay competitors that have many links to them from the search engines. The higher this number, the more difficult it will be for you to get into the top-10 for the given keyword. Remember that to get an accurate picture, you should look at the link popularity of at least the 5 first pages. It may not be representative if you don’t consider at least five.

For instance, the first top page might have lots of links, while the other nine might have very few, and if you make your decision based only on the first, chances are that you’ll ignore a productive keyword.

Alexa Traffic Rank

Alexa, a Google service, has been collecting data on the traffic of various websites traffic by distributing its toolbar among Web surfers and anonymously tracking their activity. This is actually a trustworthy index of the page’s popularity. However, the most important thing to remember about Alexa Traffic Rank is that it is a REVERSE indication. The LOWER the number is, the MORE hits the website gets. Figures from 10,000 and lower indicate really good traffic.

For instance, Yahoo! has a rank of “1″ and Google is “3″. This figure could be used as a simple estimation of how much traffic your site would get if you made the top-10 for this given keyword, and if it’s really worthwhile competing.

Estimated average CPC: $0.33 – $0.55. More expensive words are respectively more popular, and thus more competitive.

Google PageRank

If the top-10 pages have a high PageRank (5 and higher), it will be difficult to compete with them, regardless of the key phrase. The lower this number among the top-10 pages, the easier your way to the top will be.

So, with all these figures explained, look at your keyword list and pick out from one to three of the best solutions. Repeat this process for every page of your site, because every page should have its own keywords.
